As a child I remember praying for things that I wanted or situations that I hoped would go my way. It was almost like God was a heavenly Santa Clause who could help pull some strings when I wanted Him to. It seemed that He didn’t always listen very well. Now, as an adult, my prayers are mostly for things that cannot be seen or touched such as comfort, peace, and strength. There are still days when my prayers are obviously answered and times when I’m not so sure. In this song, Garth Brooks introduces the concept of God answering our prayers by saying “no.” I know this has happened to me more times than I care to count as both a child and an adult. God is a loving father and the best parent ever. Just like our earthly parents, sometimes the answer is “no” for our own good. Let us pray for the grace to see the beauty in the prayers that go “unanswered” or that get answered in a way we don’t understand.
