As the older volunteers are working, they discuss their youth and what fun it would be to be young again. As they discuss the decades of their lives, their forties stand out as years they would like to repeat. This gives Jane pause because she is in her forties. The older women advise her to enjoy this stage of life and not take it for granted.
How often do I think to myself that I’ll do something, “When the time is right” or “Later, when I’m finished with x”? No matter what, there will always be some excuse that involves waiting. Waiting for what? We waste so much time waiting for something that may or may not come instead of seizing the present moment which is a gift. Today, let us worry less about the unknown and heed the words of J.R.R. Tolkien: “All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”
