Mercy in the City

Welcome back to Thrift Store Saints!  The name of the blog will not be changing, but we are starting a new book this week titled Mercy in the City by Kerry Weber.  Kerry lives in New York City where she tells her stories of one Lent spent doing the Corporal Works of Mercy.  Kerry has lots of questions as the season kicks off with a party at her apartment on Fat Tuesday evening.  Can I follow through with my Lenten sacrifices?  Should I even bother?  What would I think of the Catholic Church if I hadn’t been raised in it?

Kerry’s questions are all valid ones worth pondering.  Every Lent, rather than trying to give up something, I usually think of something I want to add such as more time spent in prayer.  Her question of “Should I even bother?” has often crossed my mind.  In the end, I make my little futile effort each year and pray that God will strengthen it by His grace.

For your reflection:

  1. Are you familiar with the Corporal Works of Mercy?
  2. What have you given up for Lent in the past and how has it worked out?
