When the man who had stolen Jane’s wallet comes to get his Christmas basket, Jane is thankful to be busy helping someone else. Later in the day, the man returns to the store again saying that something was left out of his Christmas basket. Jane reluctantly gives him the item he asked for. The co-workers who are aware of the situation are in disbelief. A few hours later when the store is about to close, another client who received help in the past comes to offer a meager donation as a “thank you” for the store’s generosity to him.
It baffles me to see the two different types of people that Jane crosses paths with in the same day: the greedy and the grateful. I’m reminded of a familiar scripture passage that says “…He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous” (Matthew 5:45). It always amazes me when I see scripture readings playing out in real life, and this is definitely one example.
- What lesson can we learn from how Jesus treats everyone, no matter who they are?
- How does an individual’s background determine how you treat them?
