Everything is Gift
Jane and her crew visit an apartment in a less than desirable neighborhood. The apartment belongs to a woman who has just been discharged from the hospital and the nurses donated the bed to her. The new owner of the bed comes home to find that her neighbors have been using her place as they saw fit in her absence. She sends them on their way as Jane helps set up the bed. Jane notices the lack of food in the apartment and asks if the woman has anyone to help her. She claims to have no friends and doesn’t want any. Jane lets her know that she must have made friends with the nurses because they gave her the bed. The woman cries because she’s never had her own bed. She feels very blessed and praises God for giving her what she needed.
While I’ve always had a bed to sleep in, there have been times when I didn’t know how I was going to get something I needed. During the summer of 2015 I walked the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage across Spain. One evening about halfway through, I was walking back to my hostel with food when my foot suddenly hurt. I thought it was nothing, but the pain got worse by the minute and soon I felt I couldn’t walk on it very well. Having seen many pilgrims stop for a day here and there due to blisters, I was afraid my pilgrimage would have to stop there more than one night. How fortunate for me that one of the sisters running the hostel had a background in medicine. I asked her to look at my foot and she thought it was a spider bite requiring hydrocortisone and ice. Fortunately, I already had hydrocortisone and sister found a little ice in the hostal’s freezer. Within a couple of hours my foot felt fine and my pilgrimage was not hindered. Everything I needed was given to me. Everything we have is a gift from God.
