This week Kerry shares her experience towards becoming an associate of the Sisters of Mercy. An associate can be man or woman, does not take vows or live with the community, but promises to live their life in the same spirit as the consecrated sisters. This means Kerry would be promising to live her life with mercy and service always in mind. A friend summarized to her that it would basically mean promising to do what she’s doing anyway.
I’ve long thought that the religious life is one of the most beautiful gifts of the Church and also one of the most misunderstood. Many orders offer an associate program like the one Kerry is joining. It’s a great way for the laity to stay connected to their faith in the spirit of a certain order’s charism.
For your reflection:
What are your thoughts on the religious life and those who join it?
Would you ever consider being a lay associate like Kerry and why or why not?
